Start with the occupational series
A GS grade describes pay and responsibility, but qualification rules vary by occupation. The table is an orientation based on OPM's general administrative and management standard. It does not override an individual occupational requirement or the wording of a USAJOBS announcement.

These are common routes under one standard. Some occupations require a particular degree, coursework, credential, or different experience description. Read the specific vacancy before deciding which grade to select.
How to prove equivalent experience
Private-sector, military, nonprofit, state, local, and volunteer work can be relevant. A self-assigned label such as “GS-11 equivalent” is not enough. Give HR the underlying evidence: what you did, how independently you did it, the complexity and scale, and how long you did it. Include month/year dates and average hours per week. Match the announcement's specialized-experience statement with real examples from your work history.
For GS-12 applicants
Do not simply list a senior title or repeat “one year of GS-11 equivalent experience.” Show the particular duties in the GS-12 announcement and support each one with a position, a time period, and a concrete work product.
