Source-reviewed against linked OPM and USAJOBS guidance

Understand federal occupational questionnaires and assessments, and make your screening answers consistent with your resume evidence.

About the Author

ResumeGov Editorial Team maintains practical guidance based on public OPM, USAJOBS, and agency sources.

Each priority guide lists its official sources and review date. ResumeGov is independent and does not speak for OPM, USAJOBS, or a hiring agency.

Editorial Standards

Important: OPM sets a two-page limit, not a universal word limit. ResumeGov uses text length only as a planning signal; verify the final PDF and the instructions in the vacancy announcement.

What happens after you click Apply

A federal vacancy may ask eligibility questions, use an occupational questionnaire, and require a separate assessment. OPM describes occupational questionnaires as a way to assess competencies and collect information related to minimum qualifications. Agencies may also use structured interviews, work samples, job-knowledge tests, or USA Hire. Read “How you will be evaluated” and the instructions in the actual application before you begin.

Answer each screening question with evidence

  1. Read every response level. “Assisted,” “performed independently,” and “served as an expert” describe different levels of responsibility.
  2. Choose the highest truthful level. Do not select an answer merely because you expect it to score better.
  3. Find support in your resume. Identify the role, dates, task, scope, and outcome that justify the answer.
  4. Reconcile the whole application. Your resume, questionnaire, required documents, and interview examples should tell the same factual story.

For example, if you select “independently analyzed program performance,” a resume line that only says “helped with reports” gives little support. Add a truthful description of the data, method, responsibility, and resulting work product if you performed it. Never invent responsibilities or numbers.

Questionnaire, USA Hire, and essay prompts

A self-reported questionnaire is different from a timed skills assessment. USA Hire can assess general or technical competencies and may send a separate invitation and deadline. See our USA Hire preparation guide. If the application includes Merit Hiring Plan essays, read the essay prompt guide; those prompts serve a different purpose from qualification evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I answer federal government screening questions?
Select the highest response level you can truthfully support with specific work documented in your resume. Read each level carefully and keep your application materials consistent.
Is a USA Hire assessment the same as a questionnaire?
No. Occupational questionnaires often collect eligibility and self-reported qualification information; USA Hire provides online assessments of competencies. The vacancy explains which methods apply.
Can an agency compare my answers with my resume?
Yes. Applicants should be prepared to support questionnaire responses with duties, scope, dates, and results in their resume and other application materials.
